Reading buying signals: Systematically recognizing the right time

Written by Lars-Thorsten Sudmann | Jun 8, 2026 11:19:50 PM

The right time beats the right argument. A company that has just expanded, completed a financing round or hired a new manager in your target discipline is more receptive than one that is dormant. These signals are public - they are rarely analyzed in a structured way.

Six types of signals that reveal the timing

  • Personnel signals: conspicuous number of vacancies, new managers, establishment of an entire department.
  • Growth signals: new location, expansion abroad, press release on sales growth.
  • Financial signals: financing round, takeover, investment.
  • Technology signals: introduction or change of systems that match your offering.
  • Organizational signals: restructuring, merger, new management.
  • Market signals: regulatory changes or industry trends with pressure to act.

Have signals evaluated

An AI can search a collection of company news for precisely these types of signals and classify them according to relevance - with documentation so that nothing is invented:

Prompt - check company news for buy signals

Current information about a company (news,
career page, press releases):
[INSERT INFORMATION]

Check for the following buy signals: Personnel, growth,
financial, technology, organizational and market signals.

Output:
recognized signal | evidence (quote/source) | relevance for
our offer [OFFER IN ONE SENTENCE] on a scale of 1-5.

From signal to hanger

A recognized signal is only half the battle - it has to be translated into the response. The AI can derive a relevant conversation starter directly from a signal:

Prompt - Turning a signal into a conversation starter

Recognized buying signal: [SIGNAL].
Our offer: [OFFER].

Formulate two possible conversation starters that pick up on the
signal without being pushy.
Not a pitch, but an observation plus a question.

Conclusion: Signals reveal when someone is ready to buy. If you read them systematically instead of stumbling across them by chance, you will call the right companies at the right time. The challenge is the ongoing monitoring of many companies - a case for automation. In the next article, we bring order to the crowd: fit scoring.
